Between the dawn of civilisation and 2003, the human race created five exabytes (5.4 billion gigabytes) of information. Now we are creating that amount every two days. This much data brings with it a great need for specialists to make sense of it. Come and learn how statisticians are rising to the challenge. In this talk, we will reveal how statistics is central to the intellectual core of many businesses and industries. We will also showcase the breadth of exciting career opportunities open to statisticians in a fast-changing economy.
Prof Lim Tiong Wee received his undergraduate education in mathematics and graduate education in statistics at Imperial College London and Stanford University, respectively. He has been with NUS since he completed his graduate studies, except for a quarter spent at Stanford University in 2004 and a semester at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. Prof Lim is Deputy Head (Academic) at NUS' Department of Statistics and Applied Probability. He also has research affiliations with the Faculty’s Centre for Quantitative Finance and NUS’ Risk Management Institute.
Dr David Chew obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in mathematics from NUS. Upon graduation, he spent two years in the University of Southern California on postdoctoral training, before returning to NUS’ Department of Statistics and Applied Probability. Dr Chew is currently a Senior Lecturer at the department. He is also the IT Coordinator at the Faculty of Science.
