“I apply my passion in sustainability and love of fieldwork in my daily work, where I survey sites and analyse biodiversity information to identify trends for application in species and area management. This gives me great job satisfaction as I can make a tangible difference to the future of biodiversity conservation in Singapore.”

Dillen’s work on conserving terrestrial biodiversity involves managing a diverse range of conservation projects, in addition to working on upcoming developments and policies to ensure the long-term sustainability of biodiversity in Singapore. He also engages the public through outreach events and stakeholder meetings to generate environmental awareness.

“Over the years in NUS, I developed a spirit of inquisitiveness for knowledge and the drive to solve problems. The rigorous curriculum and training that hardwired scientific thinking into my brain led me to where I am today.”

Hussein worked at various local startups successively, right from their inception - BeMyGuest.Travel, Lazada and Zilingo prior to Bluenest. Bluenest is Singapore’s first technology-based real estate agency moving away from traditional real estate models.

“The programming skills I acquired give me an edge in developing computational methods to analyse biological and chemical data. My degree also allowed me to explore my passion for both the science and art of research, which greatly contributed towards my growth as a researcher.”

Lakshmi integrates photonics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop fast methods for detecting food toxins, improving quality control and ensuring food safety.

“My Science course laid the foundation for my career as a data scientist. I oversee all aspects of data, including data engineering, analytics, science and governance. My work also contributes to data-driven decision making within the company.”

Geraldine built the company's data strategy and infrastructure from scratch. Moka, one of the first fintech startups in Indonesia, provides cloud-based point of sales systems for businesses.

“My startup promotes sustainable food production through the use of food biotechnology. We hope to reduce the amount of food processing by-products disposed of daily in Singapore, by turning them into value-added food products.”

Jian Yong founded SinFooTech, which converts tofu whey into Sachi, a first-of-its-kind soy alcoholic beverage that is brewed using patented fermentation technology.

“My training in molecular cell biology and plant genomics in NUS equipped me to undertake research and deploy different agricultural solutions for indoor, open field and rooftop environments. My work marries the art and science of agriculture. By controlling growth conditions and optimising nutrient formulation, we can increase crop growth and yield, reduce crop cycle time and improve the quality of produce. This would enhance Singapore’s food security and resilience.”

In Republic Polytechnic, Dr Gan teaches and does research on smart urban farming. He utilises controlled-environment agriculture, optimised nutrient formulation, automation and the Internet of Things (IoT) to grow fresh and nutritious local produce.

“The rigour of mathematics training has fresh relevance in a time when Internet-enabled social communities are growing. Trending music causes many duplicates of audio to be uploaded, and which slows down processing. My work in detecting these duplicates speeds up subsequent tasks, hence enabling greater scalability.”

Leonard writes audio fingerprinting programmes to detect and capture the signature of a piece of sound that differentiates it from other sounds. This has applications for social media live streaming, short videos and social networking services.

“My studies nurtured a mindset of continuous learning. This spurred me to complete my board certification in pharmacotherapy and geriatric pharmacy. Keeping abreast on legislative updates and new scientific knowledge further enhances my practice skills for the fast-evolving healthcare sector.”

Wing Lam dispenses medications and provides patient education at the frontline. She also spearheads clinical services and undertakes collaborative research projects. She is a proud recipient of the Singapore Retailers Association Service SuperStar Award (2018), and the PSS-LF Asia Community Pharmacist of the Year Award (2015), the highest accolades in Singapore for service excellence and for community pharmacists, respectively.

“My background in science and commercial experience motivated me to explore the intersection of diverse disciplines, in order to translate research into commercially viable products. A spirit of curiosity gained from my studies provided the foundation to challenge ideas and connect the dots, a key attribute that serves me well in my business ventures.”

Chune Yang founded SpeQtral, where he combines business insights with deep knowledge of space-based quantum communications to offer business solutions that enable the next generation of secure communication networks.

“I perform statistical analysis on wide-ranging studies, from classic epidemiology to cutting-edge clinical trials. I also provide statistical consultation and course training for researchers and clinicians from various healthcare and research institutes. This enables them to advance biomedical research and healthcare.”

Carol’s work helps to enhance the quality of research and biostatistical knowledge of the medical community through collaborations on research projects and biostatistical training courses.
