Undergraduate Professional Internship Programme (UPIP)

UPIP, helmed by the Science Dean’s Office, gives Science undergraduates practical on-the-job training through structured internships during their undergraduate study. Students learn about career preparation and job-seeking processes, apply their discipline-related knowledge and professionalism in a working environment, and hone their interpersonal, communication, business etiquette and other soft skills. They often receive full-time job offers upon conclusion of their internships.

Upon successful completion of the internship, students will also be awarded Units (formerly known as Modular Credits) that would count towards their graduation requirements under Unrestricted Electives.

Three Phases: Taking On a UPIP

Ready for Internship(s) Briefing is a faculty-wide sharing session that will provide essential information on why and how to do UPIP. The sessions will also provide tips from the Centre for Future-ready Graduates on academic and career planning. Sessions are conducted twice every academic year, in Semester 1 and Semester 2. Look out for our emails!

Meet a Science Career Advisor to discuss your career plans, receive internship/career advice, get help with writing resumes and cover letters, and practise mock interviews. Please make an appointment with your Career Advisor

Students who wish to take UPIP during the semester are advised to plan their studies carefully.

Source for Internships
Pre-approved internships
These are internships that have been approved by UPIP Administration. A list of pre-approved internships can be found under Internships – Faculty of Science in NUS TalentConnectPlease complete this Qualtrics form and inform the UPIP Administration at sciupip@nus.edu.sg when you receive the offer.

Self-sourced internships
Internships may also be self-sourced from elsewhere: Either directly from employers or from NUS TalentConnect but not classified under UPIP. Please complete this Qualtrics form and inform the UPIP Administration at sciupip@nus.edu.sg about your submission. Please do not accept.

The Academic Advisor (AA) for UPIP approves your work plan, reads your weekly journals and final report, and eventually decides whether your performance in the internship is satisfactory. You may choose to contact any full-time academic staff members from the department of your major and request him or her to be your UPIP AA. Once confirmed, please inform UPIP Administration at sciupip@nus.edu.sg by providing the name and NUSNET ID of the AA together with email approval for documentation.

UPIP Send-off Briefing includes details of the UPIP workload, and a safety and best-practice briefing for UPIP students. Science Career Advisory Team will also organise a Pre-Internship Workshop for students. It is compulsory for UPIP students to attend both events. Notification will be sent.

UPIP students are required to complete the following essential components:

Work plan due at the end of first week of internship Student submits in NUS TalentConnect under Experiential Learning > Placement > Edit Experiential Learning Work Plan. Click Submit for UPIP Administration and AA to approve. Experiential Learning Placement status will be updated from Pending Approval to Approved, and other student submission sections (Report/ File Submission, Final Report Submission, Self Evaluation, Program Evaluation) will then be visible.

During the first week of UPIP, the student and supervisor put together a work plan for the duration of the internship. AA is notified via email. As long as AA has not approved the work plan, the student may make changes. The work plan has three sections: Internship/Project Objectives, Internship/Project Learning Outcomes, Internship/Project Work Description.

Weekly journals due at end of every week Student must submit a reflection at the end of each week by uploading a MS Word or other readable document file in NUS TalentConnect under Experiential Learning > Placement > Report/ File Submission > Add Attachment. Click Submit.

Tell us about your work, what you learn, your relationship with your colleagues and your supervisors, challenges you face and how you overcome them. This is not a laboratory report. Do not disclose confidential information.

Final report due at end of internship or stipulated deadline, whichever earlier Student submits in NUS TalentConnect under Experiential Learning > Placement > Final Semester Report. Complete the following sections and click Submit:

  1. Summary Description of Internship
  2. Reflection upon internship experience
  3. Closing Remarks
  4. Acknowledgement
  5. Overall rating of internship programme
