The annual Faculty of Science Alumni-Students Networking Evening took place on a Friday evening this October. The Science Faculty welcomed back 30 alumni, representing all of the seven degrees-awarding departments and the Bachelor of Environmental Studies programme, informing and inspiring their juniors, with close to 200 undergraduate science students in attendance.

The programme kicked off with a small-group dinner between the alumni and science faculty professors and staff, some of whom used to teach the alumni. It was indeed a heart-warming session for some of the alumni, as they caught up with their teachers. In attendance too were some of the science career advisors from the Centre for Future-ready Graduates, as they continued to play a pivotal role in getting science students career-ready.

Vice Dean of Science, A/Prof Chng Shu Sin, officially welcomed the alumni back and opened the networking session after the buffet dinner, and the alumni and attending students then proceeded to fruitful networking over the next one and a half hours. Many alumni regaled the students with nuggets of career wisdom, and some provided insights to students on how they made the transitions in their careers, for example, from a lab-based role to a commercial role, speaking to the versatility of a science degree. Among the attending alumni were also entrepreneurs, and, judging by the warm reception they had from the inquisitive students, suggested that some of the current crop of science undergraduates were open to setting up their own businesses.
