Faculty Awards 2022 – Outstanding Scientist Award
February 03, 2023Prof ZHU Chengbo from the Department of Mathematics is renowned for his work in representation theory of Lie groups, which has been published in top journals. His work solved a number of outstanding conjectures on representations of classical groups, which had been open for decades.
In 2022, Prof Zhu was invited to speak at the prestigious International Congress for Mathematicians, a recognition by the mathematics community of his expertise as a leading researcher of his field. He was appointed a Provost’s Chair Professor in 2021 for his impactful scholarly accomplishments which have gained international acclaim.
Prof Zhu also contributed to enhancing the international visibility and stature of the Department of Mathematics. Among others, he set up the annual distinguished lecture series the Oppenheim Lectures, and the department’s named instructor programme, the Peng Tsu Ann Assistant Professorship, which has since drawn candidates from top universities such as Oxford and Johns Hopkins.
