European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Global Investigator Network

January 03, 2023

Congratulations to Asst Prof Shruti Bhatt, Department of Pharmacy, on being selected as a new member of the EMBO Global Investigator Network.

Asst Prof Bhatt’s laboratory adopts functional and genomic approaches to understand the complex process of evolution of resistance to cancer therapy, specifically acute myeloid leukaemia. Currently, while most patients respond to standard-of-care therapy for acute leukaemia, almost all relapse within several months.

Asst Prof Bhatt studies how a population of rare cells – drug-tolerant persisters (DTPs) – escape treatment and contribute to relapse, by creating novel models and determining single-cell functional and transcriptional features of persister cells. Her laboratory investigates if subtle changes occurring in the tumour microenvironment between diagnosis and relapse help leukemia cells evade therapy.

Dr Bhatt is extremely thankful to her mentors. She says, “This award is a great recognition of our work. It will open up many new doors, especially for my students, who will have the chance to engage with scientists from across the world and attend EMBO meetings.”

The EMBO Global Investigator Network supports scientists with an excellent scientific track record and who have been group leaders for at least one but less than six years. The network provides global investigators with opportunities for exchanges with other scientists in their region and elsewhere.
