C&EN Talented 12 recognition

Assistant Professor KOH Ming Joo, Department of Chemistry, was recently named to the Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN)’s Talented 12 list (2022) for his work on sustainable catalysis.

Asst Prof Koh’s research team develops catalyst systems derived mainly from nonprecious metals such as iron and nickel. Their efforts led to the discovery of new multitasking and energy-efficient catalysts that mediate unprecedented chemical reactions. This significantly enhances the efficiency and shortens the steps required to access a target chemical compound. These catalysts are used to transform cheap and abundant feedstock chemicals into value-added products with a lower carbon footprint.

He says, “I’m truly humbled to be selected by C&EN as part of the amazing class of scientists at the top of their game, who work on pioneering chemistry research. It is gratifying to have gained recognition on the international stage. Credit should go to my students and post-doctoral fellows who helped build our programme on sustainable catalysis over the years.”

He adds, “This award will motivate us to continue our quest towards developing sustainable solutions that address compelling challenges in chemical synthesis.”
