NUS Pharmacy students sweep top awards

1 Nov 2014 NUS Pharmacy post-graduate students win 1st and 2nd places at the Pre-doctoral Poster Awards Competition for the joint 19th North American ISSX/29th JSSX meeting in San Francisco.

The International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (ISSX) is the premier organization in the study of xenobiotic metabolism and disposition. The recent 19th North American ISSX/29th JSSX joint meeting gathered more than 1000 delegates over 5 days and provided an unparalleled opportunity for scientific and professional exposure internationally. Supervised by Prof Eric CHAN, Ms YIP Lian Yee and Mr James CHAN Chun Yip from the Department of Pharmacy in NUS (see Image) were selected as part of 6 international finalists for the prestigious Pre-doctoral Poster Awards Competition, where they delivered both poster and podium presentations. In recognition of their research on novel mechanisms underlying drug-induced toxicity, Ms Yip and Mr Chan were awarded 1st and 2nd places respectively for their posters titled ‘The Gut Microbiome: Implications in Tacrine-induced Transaminitis’ and ‘Protein Glutathionylation: the Hidden Hand in Acetaminophen Toxicity’ on 22 Oct 2014. This success builds upon representations by NUS postgraduates as finalists in previous ISSX editions. Mr Chan was also invited to deliver a podium presentation titled ‘Impact of CYP3A5 Genetic Polymorphism on Mechanism-based Inactivation by Lapatinib’ in a symposium session on drug-drug interactions alongside academics and industry leaders from Genentech, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Daiichi-Sankyo. Their presentations were warmly received and stimulated lively discussion amongst delegates, and their experience showcases that NUS research is growing from strength to strength and elevates the international standing of the Department of Pharmacy and NUS amongst the xenobiotic research community.
