Dr TAN Heok Hui from the Department of Biological Sciences in NUS has just described a new species of glassperch fish. The new specie, Gymnochanda ploegi, is found in the Sanggau area in West Kalimantan, Indonesia (see Figure). This specie is coloured sexually dimorphic freshwater glassfish allied to Gymnochanda verae. It shares with its other congeners that has a body without scales, and is different from its congeners with males having a maroon-red first dorsal fin. This fish has expanded maroon-red anal and second dorsal fins with black distal portions. Its head has a reddish opercle cover and without any individual fin ray elongations.
