Visiting the world’s pharmacy
January 23, 2025India, often described as ‘the world’s pharmacy’, is a significant global supplier of affordable therapeutics, including many medicines for chronic conditions.
This is what motivated College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS)’ Lim Hon Tee to pursue the course SP2400 Science & Technology Global Industry Insights to India. We catch up with Hon Tee, who reads double majors in Pharmaceutical Science and Management on how he came away with a better understanding of India’s rich history, culture, customs and diverse industrial base.
Why join this course?
As a Pharmaceutical Science major, I was drawn to India as it is one of the world’s largest generic drug manufacturers. I wanted to see the environment these companies operate in and learn about the industry I am passionate about. In addition, I have always been fascinated by India’s unique culture and diverse cuisine and this visit allowed me to experience the rich cultural tapestry firsthand.
What are some of the trip’s highlights?
The company visits were particularly eye-opening. The visit to Apollo Hospital stood out for me, providing insights into the current needs and gaps in the medical industry. Another highlight of the trip was the networking sessions. I had the opportunity to interact with Singaporeans working at government agencies such as the Economic Development Board and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hearing their experiences about working far from home was incredibly enriching; these interactions broadened my understanding of the demands and requirements of foreign markets and working in international environments.
Culturally, the visit to S.J. Studios – a Bollywood studio and a prominent cultural icon of India – was a highlight. We visited various sets and even recorded ourselves singing in a professional recording studio! While this trip was filled with many other unforgettable moments, the experience that resonated with me the most was walking down the streets of Mumbai and immersing myself in the vibrant atmosphere of its bustling city life and lively people!
What are your learning takeaways?
This trip to India showcased its significant growth potential. I was particularly impressed by the extensive efforts being made to promote bilateral relations between Singapore and India. It is evident that our government is strategically focusing on the ACI (ASEAN, China, India) countries as the hub for future economic growth and development. This trip has fired my interest in the future business possibilities in the region.
One of the key frameworks I learned and applied during this trip was the Business Model Canvas. This tool helped me to better understand the various business models and market strategies employed by Indian companies, providing a structured approach to analysing their strengths and opportunities. I can now better appreciate how different industries run their businesses and consider the insights I can apply to the pharmaceutical industry when I graduate.
India is a wonderful place to visit. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The vibrant culture, combined with its rapid industrial growth, made for a truly enriching experience. I am looking forward to visiting India again to explore more of what it has to offer!
How do you plan to apply the knowledge you have gained from this trip?
The exposure to various industries and their business models during this trip has been immensely valuable in broadening my understanding of the corporate world. It provided me concrete insights into how knowledge from my academic studies can be directly applied in practical scenarios within different sectors. Observing firsthand how each organisation is structured and operates has deepened my appreciation for the intricacies of business management and strategy.
Moving ahead, I plan to apply the knowledge gained by actively integrating it into my academic pursuits, to better prepare myself to contribute effectively in the pharmaceutical industry upon graduation.
