Studying is not easy. Excelling in both sport and studies is even harder.

But Year 3 Data Science and Analytics (DSA) student Ashley LIM has done just that.

Badminton captivated her interest since young, “sparking a passion that still burns bright to this day.”

Ashley discovered the fast-paced, exhilarating and dynamic nature of the game in primary school. She says, “I was fascinated by how players had to stay alert and responsive to the shuttlecock’s unpredictable movements, consistently on the move, and constantly strategising.”

This motivated her to train more competitively and to participate in numerous competitions. She gradually increased her training intensity and frequency, witnessing remarkable progress and development in her skills and abilities.

Juggling her studies and her sports commitments is a challenge, but Ashley has found a balance – she creates a detailed schedule that allocates specific times for studying and sports training, which allows her to stay focused. The results of time management, prioritising and proper planning are “incredibly rewarding,” enabling her to stay on track and excel in both areas.

Edging out the top three players to represent Singapore at the prestigious Asia Junior Sports Games remains a moment of great pride for her in her badminton journey. Showcasing her skills in the international stage and facing some of the toughest opponents, was an adrenaline-fuelled experience that reminds her of the rewards that come from hard work and commitment.

Badminton has taught her valuable lessons which are equally applicable to her studies – teamwork, patience, perseverance and the joy of pushing her limits.

Sports has always been a significant part of Ashley’s life, and it will follow her in the future as she ventures out to other sports engagement opportunities, such as coaching and mentoring younger athletes or volunteering in community sports programmes.
