Undergraduate Teaching Opportunities Programme by Science (UTOS)

Undergraduate Teaching Opportunities Programme by Science (UTOS) is designed to help undergraduate students develop important competencies and practical skillsets that are relevant not only for them to contribute to the work force but also to be life-long learners, capable of critical, empathetic and independent thinking. UTOS is particularly suitable for undergraduate students who wish to acquire or hone their teaching skills under the supervision of experienced teachers, with up to 8 Units allowed within the UE space during his or her candidature and will be graded on a ‘CS/CU’ (Completed Satisfactorily/Completed Unsatisfactorily) basis.

Undergraduates from all faculties except Medicine, Dentistry and Law may take part.

It is recommended that students have completed at least 2 semesters of study at point of application and attained a GPA of 4.00 or higher. And have attained good grade for the course they are assisting with.

Students can also choose to undertake either a 4 Units or 8 Units UTOS

  • Workload: 130 hours (4 Units)
    • Students undertaking a one-semester long UTOS will register online for a 4 Units UTOS course(i.e. UTOS2001X or UTOS2002X). Students will be evaluated at the end of the semester and receive a CS/CU grade for the course.
  • Workload: 260 hours (8 Units)
    • Students undertaking a two-semester long UTOS will register online for one 8 Units UTOS course(i.e. UTOS2201X will be preallocated at the beginning of the first semester that they embark on the project). They will only receive an IP (in progress) grade for that course at the end of the first semester since evaluation only takes place at the end of two semesters. The Dean’s Office will preallocate UTOS2201X at the beginning of the second semester. Upon evaluation at the end of second semester, students will receive a final CS/CU grade on course UTOS2201X.
