Real life CSI!

Lecture Theatre 27 Foyer

Check out our crime scene and step into the shoes of a forensic scientist for a day! With the rise of new technologies, we are developing new ways to find and preserve crime scene evidence. We will showcase some of the current technology used by forensic scientists and crime scene investigators working in the field.

Come and try out forensic techniques which are used to solve cases in Singapore! Witness how we find and preserve fingerprints, important pieces of evidence in a crime scene, using fingerprint dusting and lifting. And keep a lookout for our clips on Inside Crime Scene, an international show on Netflix.

Tiny creatures, big solutions

Lecture Theatre 27 Foyer

Despite their small sizes, insects provide essential ecosystem services. However, they are often overlooked. The pollinating activity of insects is essential for fruit production, and necessary for continuing crops and the regeneration of forests. Insects are also key to biological control of pest populations in agriculture.

Importantly, insects are involved in a complex food web, supporting many other organisms in higher trophic levels. Insects are thus useful candidates for biomonitoring efforts due to their high species richness and abundance, allowing for sound quantitative data analysis over time. With the bulk of biodiversity richness of a tropical rainforest ecosystem in the form of terrestrial invertebrates (insects, spiders, etc.), having a handle on known insect diversity provides a useful indicator of ecosystem health.

The mysteries of colourful phenomena

Lecture Theatre 27 Foyer

Have you ever marvelled at how science and chemistry permeate our daily lives with vibrant colours? The world around us is a kaleidoscope of scientific wonders waiting to be explored!

Step into a realm of exciting discovery and have fun unravelling the mysteries behind the colourful phenomena we encounter every day. Join us on our journey of discovery through thrilling hands-on experiments and interactive experiences to understand the fascinating science that shapes our world. Each experiment is designed to ignite curiosity and deepen your understanding of the scientific principles at play. Join us at our carnival booth where fun and learning go hand in hand!

Optimising your medication use

Lecture Theatre 27 Foyer

Health screening is important in preventive care to detect the early stages of chronic diseases. Some screening tests are also used to monitor progress of the patient's response to their medications. Come and learn how to measure your blood pressure (BP) and read the BP monitor, and get readings for your own assessment!

Drug interactions may reduce or enhance their effectiveness. Learn to identify drug interactions using a matching card game where you will get cards containing various medications and food. During the game you will learn which medication and food cannot be taken together.

New bent-toed gecko species in Timor-Leste

“We have barely scratched the surface of Timor-Leste’s biodiversity. New discoveries can have profound impacts on conservation and policy-making.”

In August 2022, we led an expedition to Timor-Leste in collaboration with Conservation International and the government of Timor-Leste. The Museum’s herpetologist, Dr CHAN Kin Onn, discovered a new species of bent-toed gecko which was named Cyrtodactylus santana, in reference to the Nino Konis Santana National Park, in which the gecko was discovered.
