Attracting Talents - Research Programmes

Science Research Programme (SRP)

The SRP is a 1.5 year-long programme jointly organised with the Ministry of Education (MOE) for junior college year 1 and Integrated Programme Year 5 students who wish to seek higher level challenges in science research. Through the SRP, selected students conduct research under the mentorship of NUS faculty members and staff from partner research institutions and agencies. This programme culminates with the Science Research Congress where students present their research findings. Please click here for more information on the SRP.

Science Mentorship Programme (SMP)

The Science Mentorship Programme (SMP) strives to cultivate the spirit of inquiry in students who are interested in science, by providing them with opportunities for interaction with scientists and to perform scientific investigations in research laboratories. The programmes are jointly organised by the Gifted Education Branch of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the following tertiary institutions and specialised organisations: NUS, National Institute of Education (NIE) /Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), Singapore Polytechnic (SP), Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) and Singapore Botanic Gardens. Each programme comprises of: (1) Mentorship Attachment, (2) Youth Science Conference (YSC).

Under the SMP, mentors from MOE’s partners offer projects for selected students to choose the ones that interest them. Each student will make an in depth study of the selected topic and identify meaningful problems for investigation. They will be exposed to the process of problem-finding, problem-solving, exploration and discovery to develop intellectual skills and curiosity that will stimulate them to evaluate and challenge information rather than be passive learners. Students will meet their mentors to work on their projects on a weekly basis from January to July and 2 weeks full time during the June school holidays. They will write a scientific paper for publication in the Proceedings of the YSC. The event will showcase through posters and oral presentations the projects undertaken by the students to an audience of peers, teachers and scientists.

The Faculty works with NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (NUSHS) to implement this 11-month long research programme for top NUSHS year 5 students. In SCIENTIA, students conduct research under the mentorship of NUS faculty members and present their research findings at the annual NUSHS Research Congress.

NUS-Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) In^3 Programme

Since 2009, the Faculty has been collaborating with CDAC to implement the annual NUS-CDAC In^3 programme, which aims to enthuse and provide opportunities for students from less privileged backgrounds to learn science through workshops and projects. The programme comprises three phases – first, ‘Science Inspire’ where students participate in workshops; second, ‘Science Investigate’ where students experience short attachments to research laboratories; and third, ‘Science Inquire’ where a select group of students engage in research projects for half a year.
